My Camera Obsura Images.

My aim for this assignment was to use the idea taken from the Camera Obsura process and use it to encourage people out of there natural surrounding and into our national parks by taking everyday scenes we're all familiar with and combining views from within the parkland's to create very original images.
A real concern I had on starting this process was that I was moving away from one of my original aims ideas that I'd set out at the beginning of this course in that I wanted to use a very much straight photography approach in my work, in reality what I've found is that to be as creative and individual in my work as it needs to be I've had to try and find a balance in that I'm happy with lets say how 'truthful' a representation of the scene my work depicts while combining a more modern approach to what is possible in today's world of  photography. Keeping consistency from my previous work in the course juxtaposition also had to be a consideration when producing these photos. I think I found it hard in the beginning to find combinations that actually work well together meaning I had to go through a lot of trial and error before I came up with this collection of work, but when I got down to actually really thinking what I want this collection to say I found it much easier because I had clear images in my head as I went about looking for the components needed.

The first image I've create kind of encapsulates the whole idea here, this is a typical view of a living room/lounge we all see everyday but across the walls you find the actual view from not more then two minutes out the front door. What I also thought work well is that by having it as a space that is completely devoid of people it's also saying you don't want to be in here but out there because as you can see know one else is here.

This views a bit C.S. Lewis in that you could almost step through the wardrobe into this different land away from your everyday life, not the best view maybe to use but it does show that its not just the natural beauty that national parks protect but also our history.

Here I wanted to connect the view in some way to the books so what I really wanted was a  view that felt a little mysterious almost fantasy in nature because after all many book we read are to help our minds go to some far off world of dreams. I think I succeeded to some degree with the moss cover woodland view because its a little mysterious, maybe not in a fantasy way but there are many place to be found in our national parks that can invoke these kinds of feelings in us.

This has to be one of my favorite images for a couple of reasons, first it combines the two scenes together really well in that it's hard to tell where one begins and the other joins in and secondly I like the way the pointer is directing you out the door again reinforcing this idea that you're  better off getting out there rather then being stuck in here. If I was to improve this view in anyway I'd say maybe if I'd open the door so that it actually look like someone had just left this would have given the shot more strength in meaning.

There's something a little dream like about this image, its possible the bedroom setting that makes me think this with the sun beam from the sky light shining down but it almost could be the sun breaking through the tree canopy to the forest floor.

Finding a photo that would work with this scene was something of a problem but the way I approached it was to try and find a common component that would create the required effect, for this I went for water as it seemed the right track to follow. The end result isn't the best as the yellow colouring of the walls made it hard to make anything combined stand out to any degree but the image of the river bed is there it just takes more time then with other photos in this section to pick out the details. The reason I went with this association was that I thought about somewhere in the natural world most linked to this place in the home, running water lead me to the best choice this being a river.

Here I'm focusing on the idea of space, one thing that our national parks offer is massive open spaces so by taking a very small and crammed room and giving it this very grand view it makes it feel like there's more room then there truly is. This is one fact that many of us find in that we do live in relatively small space's without understand that the space is outside to live our life's to the fullest extent possible. Still need a little work blending these two images together as I can see areas I've missed.

The idea of passing away time in out national parks is what influenced the creation of this image, the idea that you can do many different activities with your leisure time is what I'm saying here.

It isn't just beautiful landscapes that the national parks protect there's also a lot of our national heritage that are equally important when it comes to needing our protection. For some reason these two images just seem to sit well together to make one interesting image, I think its the combination of a slightly industrial view and the everyday jumble of life surrounding it. Still needs a little work in a few areas where I'm not that happy with the blend.

Again like this view a lot as it really draws you in, again like the other small space image before this works in a similar way making the area seem much bigger that it actually is, another reason this image works well is that there's a good contrast between the stone work of the wall and the rock face behind the waterfall itself. To me it creates a very natural feel because of this similarity in materials and colours within the frame.

The final photo in this section takes us back to the bedroom but this time with a slightly different feel, there's something very relaxing about this view I think its the colours and the lighting giving it this effect but there's more to the photo then just that. As with all the photos in the collection its the lack of the human element that the whole point because I want to encourage people out of there homes and into the beauty of the country around them, kind of getting a spirit of adventure going by giving a taster of the views that are out there waiting to be found. Here its the thought of why stay in bed when there's a big world out there to explore.

Should be very interesting  reading what my tutor makes of this collection but for me personally I feel good about what I've produced here better then I have with some of my work anyway.
